Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I balance my dedication to my students with my desire to have an engaging, thoughtful, and democratic classroom. I value student input, buy-in, and valuable content in the classes I teach. My students will find I always provide a safe, collaborative, and comfortable classroom and an ear for any troubles they may face. I show up to every session authentically and truly put myself into every lesson, every moment of feedback, and every conversation held in confidence.

Some of my strengths as a teacher include my ability to build community, my ability to react and scaffold on the spot in the face of challenges or questions, and my determination to show that music theory is not a chore, but an opportunity to engage with the music we love.

As I continue to grow as an educator, I look forward to developing more skills in lecture preparation and course design. I also want to continue innovating my own teaching practices so that they are always informed by research and scholarship in pedagogy.
